I was watching a program about the development of the WW2 Submarine service. The program mostly dealt with the development of engines that did not have cylinder heads. Someone asked the question, “What is the most common problem with the big engines was the heads. The head gaskets failed, the heads cracked. So, this guy figures out a better way. It was laughed at by the engineers. He was told it would never work. Guess what? It ended up being the engine used in all the submarines. It was also put into locomotives and pushed the steam locomotives into retirement.
